How old do you have to be for a fatbike?

At FatbikedealXL.nl we find it important that you are well informed about the rules and laws that apply to the use of fatbikes. A frequently asked question we receive is: How old do you have to be legally to be allowed to ride a fatbike? Below we explain the rules that apply to riding a fatbike in the Netherlands.

General Regulations for Electric Bicycles (E-bikes)

In the Netherlands, fat bikes are generally subject to the same rules as electric bicycles, as long as they meet certain conditions:

  • Maximum Supported Speed: The fat bike may not travel faster than 25 km/h with pedal assistance.
  • Maximum Motor Power: The motor power must not exceed 250W.
  • No Throttle: The bicycle may only provide assistance when you pedal; fat bikes with a throttle are not permitted as regular electric bicycles.

Legal Age Limit

  • Minimum age: There is no specific legal minimum age for riding a regular electric bike or fatbike with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h. In principle, both children and adults are allowed to ride a fatbike, as long as they are able to participate safely in traffic.
  • Recommended Age: While there is no strict age limit, it is generally advised that children under the age of 16 should only ride a fatbike under adult supervision, especially on busy roads or in traffic. This advice is based on the required level of traffic awareness and the ability to control the speed and weight of a fatbike.

Fatbikes with Higher Speed or Throttle

    • Speed Pedelecs and Throttle Bikes: If a fat bike can go faster than 25 km/h or is equipped with a throttle, it falls into the category of "speed pedelec" or "moped." Stricter rules apply to riding these vehicles:
      • Minimum age: You must be at least 16 years old.
      • Driving license: You must be in possession of a moped driving license (AM).
      • Insurance: The speed pedelec must be insured.
      • Helmet requirement: Wearing an approved helmet is mandatory.

    Summary

    • Regular Fatbikes: There is no legal minimum age for fatbikes, which are considered regular electric bicycles (up to 25 km/h and without throttle). They are suitable for both children and adults, but it is recommended that children under 16 years old ride under adult supervision.
    • Speed Pedelecs and Throttle Bicycles: For this category a minimum age of 16 years, a moped driving license, insurance and helmet requirement apply.
